Bono Birthday Fundraiser Raises Over $32,000
Schenectady, NY (ContentDesk) May 20, 2006 -- The African Well Fund is excited to announce the grand total for
the 4th annual Build a Well for Bonos Birthday fundraising event. U2 fans from around the world donated a total of $32,051.43. The donations were collected in honor of Bono for his May 10th birthday and will be used to fund water projects in Zimbabwe.For the fourth year in a row, the African Well Fund asked U2 fans who have been inspired by Bonos tireless activism on behalf of Africa, to make a donation in his honor. Once again fans responded generously. Donations were collected from March 22nd through May 6th.
As with the previous Build a Well for Bonos Birthday events, donations were received from all over the world, including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Brazil and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
A significant portion of the total was raised through an Ebay auction of U2 concert photos. U2 fan photographers donated nearly 100 photos. The auction brought in more than $11,000.Donations from the previous
birthday fundraisers totaled more than $50,000 and were used to finance water projects in Uganda, Ethiopia and Angola. This year the funds raised will be used for a project in Zimbabwe.
The money will be used to implement an Integrated Community Water and Sanitation project. The project will provide 2000 beneficiaries with safe, clean water and improved sanitation. The total cost of the project is $50,000.
